An impressive new entry level SLR, the Nikon D50 has a 6.1 megapixel CCD sensor,
more automated features than ever and a remarkably low price. Nikon promotes the
model as the "smallest, lightest and easiest to use" Nikon SLR ever
and refers to it as the "Ultimate Family Camera" which is destined to
make SLR digital a reality for everyone. They also talk about the low cost of
the D50 expanding the SLR market. All of which tells us that they were not focused
on professionals for this model.
Nikon boasts a great deal about the small size and light weight but these features
may not have the advantages to professionals that they do for home users. The
D50 saves only to SD (Secure Digital) cards, not to compact flash cards, and
if images are saved in RAW (Nikon's NEF) format, Nikon Capture software is required
but not included (cost $99.95).
We encourage professionals to also consider the Nikon D70s, which is of heartier
stock, fits better in your hand and costs only a little more. The D70 has certainly
proven itself well in use in the field and the D70s has the same body, sensor
and processor. The Nikon D70, introduced just 15 months ago, has become be the
most popular model on the market for youth sports photography.
We fully expect the Nikon D50 to be a big winner. It is predictably impressive
that it can be sold for just $899 as an "outfit" including the AF-S
DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED lens.
