The EOS 1D Mark III features a 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor; it can shoot 10
fps for 110 frames; has ISO levels up to 3200 and more; has a live 3" LCD
that can magnify 5-10 times, achieves speedy throughput through dual "DIGIC
III" processors and promises 50 percent less digital noise in shadow areas.
This new top-of-the-line model also features a wireless file transmitter capable
of GPS tagging and an original data security kit. All told, we believe Canon
when they say the 1D Mark III is "the most advanced EOS Digital SLR ever."
Also quoting Canon, "Photographers can expect a degree of performance and
reliability exceeding any film camera they've ever used."
Consider the facts:
1. New 10.1 megapixel Canon CMOS sensor (APS-H size, 1.3x lens conversion factor),
featuring the EOS integrated cleaning system
2. It is the world's fastest digital SLR, shooting up to 10 fps for up to 110
full-resolution JPEG images or 30 RAW images
3. New AF system has 19 user-selectable AF points, 26 additional "assist
points" and provides superior low-light performance and faster operation
4. The new lighter body has enhanced weather resistance and outstanding reliability,
and it features a shutter that's durability-tested to 300,000 exposures
5. Dual "DIGIC III" image processors works with new CMOS sensor to
produce superb image quality and a new highlight tone priority option adds control
of bright highlights.
6. A 3-inch LCD monitor features a "Live View" function.
7. It is compatible with over 50 EF lenses and a wide range of EOS accessories
And the details:
CMOS Sensor. 10.1 megapixel APS-H size CMOS sensor
has an expanded sensitivity range of ISO 506400.* 14-bit conversion achieves
fine gradation and a significant drop in digital and shadow noise. Generous
28.1 x 18.7mm image size captures every nuance of the scene, from highlight
to shadow. Noise reduction method ensures high signal-to-noise ratio. The sensor's
3:2 aspect ratio is the same as in 35mm cameras, and the sensor's large size
creates an effective angle of view that is just 1.3 times the focal length indicated
on Canon EF lenses.
*Standard output sensitivity. Recommended exposure index.
Capture Speed. With continuous shooting speed of approximately
10 fps for up to 110 shots, the EOS-1D Mark III is the world's fastest digital
SLR. Bursts are first recorded to the camera¹s internal memory and then
transferred to memory cards for storage. The number of shots remaining during
a burst is displayed on the right side of the viewfinder.
Speedy shooting is achieved with a fast new 45-point AF system, sophisticated
tracking and instant metering, no matter the setting.
Perfect Focus. Has 19 user-selectable AF points and 26 additional
"assist points," and it provides superior low-light performance and
faster operation.
The camera uses a 45-point high-density area AF system to provide not only the
industry's largest continuous AF coverage area but also the greatest range of
control over focusing point selection. The focusing point can be selected automatically
by the camera or users can manually select the point.
A special processing unit is devoted solely to focusing fast, accurately and
with the widest variety of conditions. It operates up to 3x faster and a full
stop darker than on the EOS-1D Mark II N. The One-Shot AF mode is ideal for
more static subjects and an AI Servo AF mode is excellent for moving subjects.
Even with erratic or rapid subject movement, the photographer can shoot continuously,
concentrating solely on image composition.
Stronger, Lighter and More Powerful. The new, lighter body
is enhanced weather resistance and has outstanding reliability. In response
to requests from professional users, the new EOS-1D Mark III is more rugged,
yet lighter than its predecessor. It is built on a magnesium alloy shell, chassis
and top panel, providing impressive strength without excessive weight. All controls
and external cover seams are sealed from water and dust.
Other new features include an improved shutter, durability-tested to 300,000
exposures, powerful new metering, a new control interface that mirrors the design
of other popular EOS Digital SLR cameras and a 100% coverage viewfinder with
a larger pentaprism for higher magnification, plus a number of optional focusing
screens.
With the new battery installed, the EOS-1D Mark III body is about 1/2 pound
(approx. 225g) lighter than the EOS-1D Mark II N body.
Dual "DIGIC III" Image Processors. Developed to
maximize performance between the capture and recording stages of digital photography,
the Dual "DIGIC III" chips are new and work with the sensor to dramatically
enhance image quality and deliver the speed and power needed to combine 10 million
pixels and 10 fps. Digital noise is significantly reduced in shadow areas, and
color reproduction is superior.
Highlight Tone Priority. By expanding the range from the correct
level (18% gray) to the maximum allowable highlight level, the gradation from
the grays to the highlights becomes smoother and loss in highlight detail is
minimized. This lets photographers get better detail in bright highlights, even
in contrasty lighting conditions, which is beneficial for nearly any form of
professional work.
"Picture Style" settings. The technology can recreate
characteristics of favorite films. Color, saturation, sharpness and contrast
settings create noticeable variation in the saved image. In addition to six
preset Picture Styles (Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful and
Monochrome), users can create three additional settings style.
3-inch LCD monitor. This is the largest LCD monitor ever in
an SLR with interchangeable lenses and it features a Live View option through
which the photographer can compose and shoot directly from the LCD monitor.
The Live View function enables the photographer to zoom in and navigate the
composition at 5x or 10x normal size while enabling critical manual focus and
more attention to detail. Users can also choose a grid overlay, perfect for
architectural photography. In the studio or even on location, the Live View
function can be used remotely, via a computer through the 1D Mark III¹s
connection.
EF Lenses. Compatible with all Canon lenses in the EF lineup,
ranging from ultra-wide angle to super telephoto lenses, as well as various
accessories.
Flash Photography. Features E-TTL II flash metering system
which works with any of the flashes in the EX Speedlite line. Has 63-zone Evaluative
Metering Sensor which is used for flash metering, giving even finer metering
command of the image area. Provides reliable flash output whether shooting fill-in
flash pictures in sunlight, or using flash in total darkness.
Software. Included with the camera are:
Canon EOS Digital Solution Disc, which features powerful software programs
designed to extend the EOS experience to the computer. These include Canon's
ZoomBrowser EX for Windows® (Version 5.8), ImageBrower for Macintosh®
OS X (Version 5.8), Digital Photo Professional (Version 3.0), Canon's EOS
Utility (Version 2.0), RAW Image Task (Version 2.6), PhotoStitch, and PTP
TWAIN Driver. Each application is designed to perfect captured images and
streamline the digital workflow. ZoomBrowser EX v. 5.8 and Digital Photo Professional
v. 3.0 for Windows are compatible with the new Windows Vista operating system,
too.
Digital Photo Professional, an image processing program that enables high-speed
RAW image processing, high-speed previewing for real-time image adjustment
and support for sRGB, Adobe RGB and Wide Gamut RGB color spaces. Because it¹s
CMS (Color Management System) compatible, Digital Photo Professional allows
for easy image layout and printing in Adobe RGB in conjunction with Easy-PhotoPrint
and PictBridge printers. It also features the Dust Delete Data Detection tool
for cleaner images.
EOS Utility for Macintosh or Windows handles the connection between the
camera and computer, whenever they're connected via USB. It allows remote
controlled shooting from the computer, handles downloading of images from
the camera to the computer, and allows seamless linking to either Canon's
ZoomBrowser/ImageBrowser or Digital Photo Professional software once images
have been copied to the hard drive. Furthermore, it's used to upload settings
back into a USB-connected camera.
ZoomBrowser EX for Windows and ImageBrowser for Mac OS X are the easy,
user-friendly options for viewing and editing of JPEG and even RAW image files.
Both allow viewing of numerous types of images including finished TIFF and
BMP files. Both also have a variety of search options for finding images,
allow re-naming of single images or batches of files, and offer a variety
of options for printing without using a separate image-editing program.
RAW Image Task for Windows/Macintosh. This software is an integrated component
of ZoomBrowser EX (Windows) or ImageBrowser (Mac). It allows processing of
RAW images from EOS cameras, including the new EOS-1D Mark III, with a variety
of adjustment possibilities. These options, as well as the overall color,
contrast and "look" of RAW Image Task, closely mimic the characteristics
of Canon¹s in-camera JPEG processing.
